Tips on commissioning furniture

Michael McDunn has worked closely with many craftsmen and interior designers during his 30 years of professional woodworking experience, and is familiar with the styles of multiple periods and regions. Michael works closely with every client, advising on style, construction, finish, etc., assisting the client in best working their vision into a physical reality.

When considering a custom piece, it is helpful to keep the following factors in mind:

Size
The size of a piece of furniture can greatly affect the perception of the size and proportions of nearby objects and the room itself.

A large entertainment center may dominate a small living room; a tiny dining table may be at odds with the proportions of the chairs or room.

Style
Whether heavy or delicate, Sheraton or Modern, it is important to consider how well the line and stylistic implications of a newly introduced piece will coexist with others that share the space.

Practicalities
Does your idea for an audiovisual cabinet include access for cables? Will the surface bearing the handsome marquetry be readily visible in the piece's intended location? These considerations can affect the design of a piece.

Wood Species and Finish
Michael McDunn can provide ready advice regarding the compatibility of different wood species and finishes, and also staining options. Keep in mind the intended location of a piece; direct sunlight can have an impact on certain woods and finishes over long periods of time.

Also, some finishes are more appropriate than others when a piece will be subject to heavy wear, such as a dining table regularly visited by young children.
